Welcome to the sixty-seventh edition of The Wealth Builder Carnival. The purpose of this carnival is to collect articles from the blogosphere on building, preserving and keeping enough wealth for a comfortable retirement. For reference, I have tried to keep the carnival content tightly focused on wealth building and did not include submissions that were off topic. For reading convenience, the posts are listed with a brief summary or comment by the submitter and organized into seven categories: Earning, Insuring and Protecting, Investing, Living Frugally, Retiring, Saving and Taxes.

Earning

John presents College and Future Earnings: What?s the Connection? posted at Wallet Blog, saying, “School for school’s sake, not necessarily the best way to plan for your financial future. Look at the overall picture first, then pick the path to success that is right for you!”

Jon Rhodes presents Can You Handle Money Success? posted at Affiliate Help!, saying, “Suppose all your financial plans have come to fruition. Can you really handle this new lifestyle you have worked so long and hard to acquire?”

Investing

Dividends4Life presents 20 Dividend Stocks Giving Shareholders A Raise posted at Dividend Growth Stocks, saying, “Dividend stocks are sometimes referred to as defensive stocks since many investors flee to them in an economic downturn. Their dividends, if sustainable, provide a minimum level of positive return. This cushions the downward pressure from the market. Better yet, great dividend companies not only sustain their dividends in a downturn – they actually raise them.”

Dr. Dean presents Can You ?Like? This Post: On Facebook? posted at Dr. Dean’s TheMillionaireNurse.com Blog, saying, “You may already have shares of Facebook in your mutual fund or retirement account. Will you be rich when they finally go public? Read on-but don?t buy that Lexus, yet!”

Living Frugally

Paul Vachon presents Personal Finance for College Graduates posted at The Frugal Toad, saying, “Graduating college is an exciting time in your life. You are finally on your own and facing many important decisions such as what career path to choose or where to relocate. Decisions made now can have a big impact on your potential income and living expenses. If I could offer one piece of personal finance advice to a new college graduate it would be to start saving money as soon as possible. Here are several other tips to get you on the road to financial success.”

Theresa Torres presents Getting the Best Workout on a Shoestring Budget posted at Muscle Building Daily, saying, “You don’t need to break the bank to get in good shape. Here are some suggestions to guide you in the right direction to keeping fit and healthy.”

Retiring

Super Saver presents Ten Worst States for Retirees posted at My Wealth Builder, saying, “Here is a list of the ten worst states in which to retire posted at TopRetirements.com.”

Taxes

Bill Smith presents The Relationship Between Capital Gains And Economic Growth posted at 2012 Taxes – Free Tax Filing Options, saying, “Find Out whether or not lower taxes on capital gains promote economic growth.”

For people who are retired or are looking for any firm source to purchase must stay updated to gold news. This will assist them in making an intelligent decision and enable them to earn easily. There are numerous benefits that are associated directly with the gold investment.
This can be related to the rising need for these metals and also the scarcity of supply attached to them. You can find sources worldwide for important metals and minerals nevertheless the danger of mining such deposits as well as the costs involved makes them more expensive and valuable. The expense cover manpower, equipments, storage, and conversion into materials which can be used.
The primary reason with this high demand in gold investment is a belief that rate of growth of bullion demand will quickly outpace the gold supply. The weak financial situation has forced many investors to change their domain portfolios. Therefore, they?ve got rightly turned for the investment in gold. The majority of the wise investors have become keeping about 10 percent of these investments in the gold assets.

The reality is that you?d be wise to hold onto your metals investments in times of both economic strife and economic ease. Metals are not a ?desperation? option, but instead an option to keep investors from ever being forced to become desperate. By continuing to keep a few bucks in metals rather than cash, investment accounts, or another options, you should be capable of also have money for any rainy day.

Never rush when it comes to investing your hard earned money. Keep in mind that every dollar you?re investing is tough earned money that you must work to get, so don?t dump it foolishly. Take time to get offers from different people, think things over and after you?re finished with which make a choice.
The pre-set situation suggests that the demand for bullion will stay healthy. It would appear that gold is here now to sustain a captivating market and encourage robust investments. There is certainly growing awareness amongst investors regarding bullion as an indispensable investment vehicle. Gold has got the potential to play a strategic role when confronted with a multi challenged financial setup. Many investors consider gold etfs, that are regarded as just about the most desirable hedges against economic downtime. ETF investment accounts for a sizable chunk of total ignot investment.

Now, you could ask that how about purchasing silver? Is silver as precious as gold, or perhaps is it just a secondary option with regards to value? Relax, and look at this; similar to gold, silver been specifically used as a safe investment option and the metal too was able to withstand through economic turmoil during time. Silver too is bought in varied forms like silver bars, silver utensils, silver jewelry, silver coins, and silver gift boxes.
Gold investing will probably be the only purchasing a little while. Wait only a minute, you exclaim! What have you been talking about? How could gold investing be the only investing? That produces no sense at all! Well, the solution to that question may seem like it does not result from the world, and that is partly correct. The planet to be sure it is about to change and gold investing is going to end up being the only investing!

Being a huge Twilight fan has nothing to do with me posting this video clip. I am totally in love with the lyrics of this song! As soon as I heard them for the first time memories of my long distance relationship with ?S? came rushing back to me.

Long distance relationships are hard, they demand a higher level of commitment (in a way), not to mention Trust.?Putting the fact that we were so different culturally aside, being in a long distance relationship sucked no matter what. We were apart from each other months at a time and could meet for a day or two once every 2-4 months? It was pure hell but we had it easier than others out there.

Communication was again the key to keeping us both sane. We were committed to keep in constant contact throughout the day, he would give me a good morning call ? a 5min call that I treasured more than anything. We would then text during the day, chat online after work and he would call me at night until we fell asleep. This is how it was for us until we would meet face to face.

If for some reason this means of contact was broken, say for example we had to go out with friends, it would change things? we felt the distance between us more than before. We would miss each other terribly, I had never missed anyone that much in my entire life. There were times when we would disagree and the pain and fear this would bring each time was almost unbearable. It wouldn?t be such a big drama if we were closer but the fact that we were apart and couldn?t speak face to face or give each other a hug made it all the more difficult.

Most of our disagreements back then were due to the fact that we couldn?t agree on which one of us should make the move to live closer to the other and the great matter of me being so important to him and yet being a deep dark secret that he guarded with his life from his family.

I remember writing him a poem describing my loneliness and it had a profound effect on him. We were both feeling the same way. We both had the same fears? would he get sick of me and waiting and leave me and vice versa?

When I heard the song above and the words ?One Step Closer??are being sung, I think this is exactly how it felt every day. As each day passed, I was one step closer to seeing him and one step close to being with him permanently.

I?ll never forget the first time he came to see me?

I was in the car with a friend of mine, we were driving to the airport which was an hour away from where I lived. I found it so surreal that here I was in a car headed toward the airport and he was already in the air on a plane down to see me???One Step Closer?

We reached the airport, it was practically deserted or so it felt like. We couldn?t see anyone around! Definitely not what you would expect from an airport but I did live in the middle of nowhere . We made our way to the big windows and waited? it felt like the longest wait of my life and with each minute that passed, I felt the butterflies in my tummy getting stronger and started to shake with nervousness and anticipation? Looking up to the sky, I noticed a bright light in open air? I wondered if that was the light from the plane? after a few mins the light got bigger and a few minutes after that, took on the form of a plane? his plane.

I watched what felt like in slow motion the plane come closer and land? by this stage I was jumping with excitement! The plane stops almost in front of where we were and I see the passengers step out of the plane, we start to make our way to the front of the entrance to meet him? again, I felt as though I was waiting for ever? watching everyone else came out but him? and then? I saw him! He looked up at me and smiled and looked down again as he continued to make his way to us. Gosh I missed him! He looked so handsome and I couldn?t believe that he had gotten on a plane and flew over to the country just to see ME

We gave each other a hug? no kisses in public!

After that we travelled backwards and forwards to see each other but as always, the first times we never forget! I felt like the luckiest woman on earth? after enduring so much heartache to have this person who was willing to do whatever it took to stay with me was just? amazing. We treasured our meet ups because we didn?t have them often. Time went by so quickly when we were together.

Long distance relationships don?t always work out but they are worth every tear, every stress, every disagreement, every bit of effort. I?m not sure why I posted this but I couldn?t stop thinking about it and just had to share this special moment in our lives with you.

With parliamentary elections?scheduled for?next week, Iran has begun blocking Internet services, Web security experts say, adding to concerns that?government leaders hope to?shut off Iranians from the rest of the online world.

The Tor Network, which provides free software for anonymous use of the Internet, reported that on Feb. 9, Tehran began filtering keywords and throttling or shutting down access to sites that use a form of?security called Secure Socket Layers, or SSL. The protocol, which encrypts data being sent back and forth between servers and users, is used by such popular sites as Gmail and Facebook. Web addresses protected by SSL begin “https,” instead of “http.”

Activists in repressive countries often use Tor services to get around such restrictions, and before Feb. 9, Iranians were the second-largest users of Tor. But because Iran targeted the core SSL protocol, “Tor stopped working too,” the organization said.

The action is blocking email and some Web access for as many as 30 million Iranians who use SSL-protected sites, reported CBR Systems & Network Security, a European technology organization.

Iran, which will hold parliamentary elections?on March 2,?has referred to Google and other search engines as “spying tools,” and it has throttled access to foreign web servers?previously at?politically sensitive times. The free-expression activist group Reporters Without Borders has branded Iran as an “enemy of the Internet.” (.pdf)

Online journalists censored, attacked: report

Iran’s Communications and Technology Minister Reza Taghipour said Monday that a firewalled “national Internet,” which Tehran has been promising since as early as 2006, would be launched in the spring.?Internet security analysts and open-Internet activists say the “national Internet” would act as a closed intranet sealing Iranians off from large chunks of the web. Similar systems are known to be in use in China and North Korea.?

The Iranian news agency Mehr quoted Taghipour as saying at a cyberdefense forum in Tehran that “the first phase of this network will become operational in the month of Khordad,” which straddles May and June.?

Colton Dixon, Reed Grimm and Elise Testone are all moving on.

By Craig Berman

After one night of the ?American Idol? semifinal selection process, there are three facts to note heading into Thursday?s episode: If your favorite singer is a woman whose fate hasn?t been revealed yet, you may be in trouble. If it?s a man you?re worried about, you have a better shot. And if you?re cheering for Adam Brock, you really, really hate the show right now.

By the end of Wednesday?s two-hour episode, 22 singers had learned their fate and 14 of the 24 semifinalists were revealed. Very few of the outcomes were surprising, but that didn?t stop the ?Idol? judges from milking the tension for all it was worth.

Eight of the 12 spots for women have already been claimed. Among them are a pair of teenagers in Jessica Sanchez and Brielle Von Hugel. Sanchez?s backstory hook is that she?s part of a huge family and her mom is unemployed because of Sanchez’s music career. As for Von Hugel, her mother, Camille, has been the star of the peanut gallery so far.

?Where did you get that tan?? host Ryan Seacrest asked mama Von Hugel on Wednesday?s show.

?Out of a can,? she replied.

Simon Cowell, take note. She could be your next ?X Factor? host with rejoinders like that.

Jen Hirsh, Haley Johnson, Elise Testone, Chelsea Sorrell, Baylie Brown and Erika Van Pelt also moved on to varying degrees of fanfare. Brown had to undego the torture of hearing Steven Tyler say, ?It doesn?t give me great pleasure to say this?… [cue Brown?s heart stopping] actually, it makes me ecstatic.? But she never looked nervous, a good sign for her going forward.

Meanwhile, Van Pelt got the most lukewarm endorsement, as J.Lo first told her, ?We had a lot of people who didn?t do as amazing as we thought they were gonna do, and unfortunately you were one of those people.? Then she?added, ?We?re gonna take one more chance on you.? In other words, don?t necessarily expect Van Pelt?to still be around in April.

Only three women were denied: Blaire Sieber, Naomi Gillies and Lauren Gray. Gray might have been a mild surprise, but she wasn?t shocked.

?I knew it was coming,? she said as she hugged the judges

?You?re 23, you?re so good and you?re so close,? Randy Jackson told her. But not close enough.?

For those of you doing the math, that makes 10 women with uncertain fates, and only four spots in the semifinal remaining.

As for the men, unless you?re a big Richie Law fan, nothing was surprising.

Were the judges going to send Colton Dixon home at this stage for the second year in a row after they had to browbeat him to get him to audition again in the first place? Would they bring the wacky Reed Grimm this far just to let him go now? Could they really send Phillip Phillips back to the pawn shop musical circuit?

No, no and no.

The same goes for Heejun Han, who?s sure to make it big somewhere even if he doesn?t last long here. ?You?re a better star than you are a singer,? Steven told him when he gave him the good news. A throwaway quip, perhaps, but also true. We?ll find out next week whether Han’s that good in front of the camera or whether the editors have just been really good to him.

Creighton Fraker and Joshua Ledet might have been on shakier ground, but both were camera hogs in recent episodes and therefore, obvious picks. But we did find out that Fraker?s biological father is in the band Flotsam and Jetsam, so feel free to break that out at your next ?Idol? trivia night.

We also saw the dream end for five others. Cowboy?Law was the most prominent, but his final ?Ring of Fire? solo didn?t do much to boost his chances. Neco Starr was the biggest surprise, while Caleb Johnson lost his shot with a brutal performance in his final solo. Clayton Farhat and River St. James also were shown the door.

That leaves 10 men left with six spots available, pretty good odds.

As for Brock, his fate was left up in the air as the cliffhanger heading into Thursday. All we know is that he broke down trying to explain how much this meant to him, and he heard Randy tell him, ?Our decision for you is definitely not unanimous.?

Here?s one unanimous decision from ?Idol? fans to those in charge of the show: Those kind of cliffhangers are annoying. Fortunately, that drama will end Thursday, and we?ll finally find out the last 10 of the 24 singers who will move onto the live episodes next week.

Raised-bed gardening.

Planters are raised to a height so that someone in a wheelchair can easily reach them. This can provide easy outdoor activities all spring, summer, and fall, even for the elderly who require senior care.

Most malls, fairgrounds, farmers? markets and other places now have wheelchairs or scooters you can rent for the day if necessary.

Local State Park with a Fishing Area

Fish from a handicap ramp or pier. Eat hot dogs and hamburgers cooked on a grill.

Call ahead and talk to the park employees. They can tell you where the wheelchair accessible area of the park is. Reserve it in advance.

Easy Crafts

You can find all kinds of easy crafts for seniors for the aging parent who is creative. There are websites everywhere that give directions for crafts that older seniors can do.

Those who have a tough time holding things with their hands might do best with crafts that use large pieces or where painting is the main activity.

What about the Wii?

You may have heard your own children or grandchildren talking about the new game called Wii. This is a device that mimics a sport, such as bowling, tennis, etc., without actually using the sport?s equipment. They?re fun and good for keeping fit in any age.

Have a Singer in the Family?

Many towns have senior clubs, senior centers and gatherings?some of them include senior groups who get together just to sing!

Summary

Even though your aging parents may be requiring senior care, attempting to keep them active physically and mentally is incredibly important for quality of life. Anyone in the home who is providing senior care on a regular basis can easily incorporate a few of these activities into their weekly routine.

What kinds of activities can you think of that are appropriate for aging adults who are requiring senior care?

If you have enough money saved to purchase one on a cash basis owning your very first house for your family is very easy. You will need to get a loan to be able to afford to purchase a house however, if you are like the average American. In choosing the best loan that you can afford there are different terminologies that you need to know regarding home loans that may help you.

To purchase a house on a loan, you are actually applying for a mortgage when you are planning. In order to pay for any real estate a mortgage is a loan that you can avail. Where the house sits on this includes the house and any land. Through a mortgage loan will be used as collateral for your loan the house and the land that you are purchasing. The lending institution such as the bank who gave you the mortgage has the right to take your house and land away in order to cover your missed payments this means that if you are not able to make your loan payments anymore.

To the loan payments themselves other terminologies that you need to understand are related.

By a home loan calculator the amount that you have to pay regularly on you loan can easily be computed. Even if you will use a home loan calculator, you must know the different terminologies associated with computing for the amount that you have to pay regularly however. Here are the following terminologies:

For the actual amount of money that you are loaning in order to purchase the real estate of your choice the principal is the term used. To use so that you can purchase the house that you want this is the amount of money the bank will allow you. ?

Interest. For using their money to purchase your home the interest is the amount that the bank will charge you. On your real estate project the interest is the amount that the bank will earn from investing their money. To mortgages is computed as a percentage of the principal loan amount the interest rate given. As compared to the smaller banks larger commercial banks may offer lower interest rates on loan. Interest rates also depend on current economic indicators. ?

Interest rates for loans may be fixed or adjustable depending on the lending institution giving out the loan. Fixed-rate mortgages offer a set rate of interest that will not change throughout the term of the loan. Although the amount you will pay through your loan amortization will vary each month, the total amount that you will pay (principal and interest) remains the same. This type of mortgage is ideal for homeowners who are on a budget.

Over time adjustable-rate mortgages on the other hand have interest rates that vary.? At a lower rate than a fixed-rate loan the initial interest rate offered for this type of loan is given. The interest rate rise until the interest rate surpasses those of the fixed-rate loans? however, as the loan term progresses.

Term. To purchase your home the term is the amount of time that you are allowed to pay the lending institution the amount of money that you borrowed from them. Lending institutions and banks usually give out mortgage loans from a fifteen-year to a thirty-year term because purchasing a home requires a large amount of money.
Amortization. Amortization is the terminology given to the process of dividing the total amount of mortgage (principal + interest) into equal payments over the term of the loan. The payments that you pay regularly through amortization will go toward the payment of the interest during the earlier part of the term. Later payments through your amortization will then go to the payment of the principal amount. ?

PITI. Towards the fulfilment of you mortgage is not always the combination of the principal plus the interest the payments that you make regularly. In the amortization of your real estate loan the acronym PITI stands for principal, interest, taxes, and insurance which are included. For mortgage insurance by negotiating it with your lender however, you can avoid paying.

Knowing these different terminologies will enable you to understand better how home mortgages work.

NEW YORK (AP) ? T-Mobile USA, which just had its acquisition by AT&T blocked by regulators, is urging the federal government to block another deal in the wireless world: Verizon’s planned purchase spectrum from cable companies for $3.9 billion.

In a filing late Tuesday, T-Mobile USA said the Federal Communications Commission should stop the deal between Verizon Wireless, Comcast Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc., Bright House Networks and Cox Communications because it would place an “excessive concentration” of wireless spectrum in Verizon’s hands.

With more wireless spectrum, a phone company can raise download speeds and serve more data-hungry devices like smartphones and laptops with cellular broadband.

Verizon Wireless, the country’s No. 1 cell phone company, already has a relatively large amount of spectrum, while T-Mobile, the No. 4, does not.

MetroPCS Communications Inc., the fifth-largest cellphone company, also urged the FCC to block the deal. It said the parties had not provided enough information to prove that the acquisition was in the public interest.

Nine public interest groups filed their own motions to block the deal on Tuesday, ahead of a filing deadline on Wednesday.

Sprint Nextel Corp., the No. 3 carrier, took a more measured stance. It didn’t ask the FCC to block the deal outright, but said the agency should look closely at the wider implications of the deal, including the provision that Verizon Wireless and the cable companies market each other’s products in their stores.

The cross-marketing has already started in some areas, with Verizon Wireless stores selling Comcast cable service and Comcast stores touting Verizon cellphone plans.

Analysts hailed the co-marketing agreement as a historical shift, because phone companies and cable companies are usually bitter rivals. Verizon Communications Inc., the New York-based majority owner of Verizon Wireless, still competes with the cable companies in providing pay-TV and broadband service.

Last week, a New Jersey’s Division of Rate Counsel, a state agency that advocates for consumers, asked the FCC to block the deal, also citing the spectrum accumulation issue.

Verizon Wireless has defended the deal, saying it means unused spectrum will become available to wireless subscribers.

In early December, Verizon Wireless announced a deal to buy spectrum from Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks for $3.6 billion. The cable companies had bought the spectrum jointly at an FCC auction in 2006, with loose plans to start a wireless company or form a joint venture with one. Those plans never came to fruition.

The parties said they hoped to close the deal by the middle of this year.

Verizon later struck a similar but separate deal to buy spectrum held by Cox for $315 million. Cox had started setting up its own wireless service, but gave up last year, saying it would be too small to compete against the big cellphone companies.
